UN-HABITAT Work on Urban Planning, Governance and Management

UN HABITAT

Abstract

Good governance, especially at the local level, allows women and men to engage with the sphere closest to them on issues of equity, accountability, transparency, local development, participation, urban planning and service delivery. UN-Habitat’s work is creating more opportunities for women to partner with men in decision-making starting from their communities to the local, national and international level.

UN-Habitat work in this area includes:

  • Promoting women’s participation in improving safety and security in their cities, disaster management, climate change, and the creation of disaster resilience communities;
  • Training and capacity building on gender mainstreaming in local governance for local governments, NGOs, and academia;
  • Capacity building for women leaders of grassroots organizations;
  • Engaging policy-makers on gender, housing, urban poverty and urban development.
  • Land and economic empowerment of women.

Universitas Forum is produced by the Universitas Programme of the KIP International School (Knowledge, Innovations, Policies and Territorial Practices for the UN Millennium Platform).
